Brouwerij Van Den Bossche – History
Late last century, in 1897, bought a certain Arthur Van den Bossche piece of land on the beautiful square in Sint-Lievens-Esse. Then he could not suspect that he would be the founder of a great brewing family. Arthur Van den Bossche was married to a daughter of the family Callebaut from Wieze. Now this family is primarily known for chocolate, they made earlier reputation as berwers. The Callebaut family had indeed both a brewery and a chocolate factory and unlike what one would expect, the production of beer was more important than the manufacture of chocolate. Moreover, thanks to the beer, the chocolate factory could survive. Today Callebaut is one of the biggest producers of Belgian Chocolate in the world. Beer and chocolate pair perefctly ….
Arthur also wanted to start brewing, as his family-in-law. That is why he had build next to his mansion als a brewery. So it was that more than 100 years ago for the first beer flowed from the brew kettles in Sint-Lievens-Esse.
In 1925 after the death of Arthur Van den Bossche his wife and later two of his sons Willy and Marc Van den Bossche developed the brewery into a thriving business.
Ignace Van den Bossche, son of Mark, became a partner in the brewery in 1975 and manager in 1981.
Ignace started immediately to modernise the production equipement of the brewery. He installed cilinderconic tanks for fermentation and lagering. Also the bottling line was fully modernised and is running now 10000 bottles of 33cl per hour.
Currently, the 4th generation is also active in the brewery. Bruno Van den Bossche, the eldest son of Ignace is responsible for the commercial activities of the brewery. Also Emmanuel, the youngest son of Ignace is now active in the brewery and is responsible for the production.
